Provide a way to determine what material an object (or just PC/NPC) collides with
It would be nice to have the information if the PC stands on solid ground like stone or on grass or wood or in water (like a pool or a lake).
This is nice for influencing the effect of fire, current, wind or to determine if a seed can be planted. Another use would be ground-based falling damage. So falling on plants or soil would be less harmful than falling on metal.
