Better looking water
Make the water look better using these techniques:
- depth maps (pre-generated on load for each cell)
- reflection & refraction maps
- specular lighting
- animated normal maps
at least the reflection & refraction maps should be made optional.
Generating the depth maps for exterior is pretty easy (just generate a texture that holds the terrain heights) For interiors, we can render the scene from the top (without the water) with a special material that outputs depth.
